The building sits in a pocket between the river and a tangle of parkway and interstate ramps. Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway passes directly beneath its terrace, Virginia Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue feed the front plaza past the Watergate complex, and drivers arriving from Virginia come off the Roosevelt Bridge with very little distance to find the correct lane. A missed turn can mean a long loop through Foggy Bottom or an unplanned trip back across the river.
Our chauffeurs make this approach routinely and choose it according to where you are coming from: Virginia Avenue from downtown, the parkway from upper Northwest and Maryland, the Roosevelt or Memorial Bridge from Arlington and Alexandria. They also know that the parkway's lane directions change at commuter hours, which affects early curtains on weekdays.
The Kennedy Center has a large garage beneath the building, and it works well until a full house returns to it at the same moment. When the Concert Hall, Opera House and Eisenhower Theater let out close together, the wait to exit can be the longest part of the night.
