What's the Difference Between Flat-Rate and Hourly Chauffeur Pricing — And Which Should You Book?

Chauffeured car service is generally priced one of two ways — a flat rate for a specific point-to-point trip, or an hourly, as-directed rate for a booking with multiple stops or an open-ended schedule. Knowing which model applies to your trip, and why, helps you understand exactly what you are being quoted.

Flat-rate pricing

A flat rate covers one trip from a specific pickup point to a specific destination — an airport transfer, a one-way ride across town — confirmed before you book and not subject to surge pricing or demand-based changes. This is the standard model for our DCA to Washington, DC route and most other single-destination trips: you know the exact cost before the car arrives, regardless of traffic or time of day.

Hourly, as-directed pricing

An hourly rate covers a booking where the itinerary includes multiple stops, waiting time, or a schedule that might change — a wedding day moving between getting-ready location, ceremony and reception, a corporate roadshow with several client meetings, or a shopping and dinner evening with no fixed return time. You are billed for the total hours the vehicle and chauffeur are reserved for you, with the flexibility to add a stop or extend the day built into that structure.

Why a single trip is not priced hourly

Pricing a one-way airport transfer hourly would not make sense — the trip has a defined start and end point, so a flat rate gives you price certainty regardless of whether traffic makes the actual drive longer or shorter than expected. Our Sprinter van day-rate guide covers the opposite case — a multi-stop day that is priced hourly for exactly this reason.

Which one should you book?

  • Choose flat-rate for an airport transfer or any single point-to-point trip with a known start and end.
  • Choose hourly for a wedding day, a corporate roadshow, a multi-stop evening, or any itinerary that might change once it is underway.

If you are not sure which fits your situation, tell dispatch your full plan when you request a quote, and we will recommend — and quote — whichever model actually matches your trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is a trip priced flat-rate instead of hourly?

For a single point-to-point trip with a known start and end, like an airport transfer — the rate is confirmed before you book and does not change with traffic or demand.

When is hourly pricing used instead?

For a booking with multiple stops or an open-ended schedule — a wedding day, a corporate roadshow, or an evening with no fixed return time.

Can I add a stop to a flat-rate booking?

A flat rate is built around a specific route, so adding significant stops usually means moving to hourly pricing — ask dispatch if your plans are likely to change.

Does hourly pricing mean the total cost is less predictable?

No — we confirm an estimated total based on your planned hours before you book, and you are billed for actual time used, with no surprise charges after the fact.

How do I know which pricing model fits my trip?

Tell dispatch your full plan when you request a quote, and we will recommend whichever model actually matches your itinerary.
