Washington Airport Transportation Guide: Getting To and From DCA, Dulles and BWI

The Washington region is served by three major airports: Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA), Washington Dulles International (IAD) and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI). They sit in three different directions from the city and each has its own mix of rail, road and parking options. This guide covers how to choose among them and how to get to and from each one without surprises.

The three airports at a glance

• DCA is in Arlington, Virginia, directly across the Potomac from downtown Washington. It is the close-in airport, focused mainly on domestic flights.
• IAD is in Northern Virginia, well west of the city near Reston, Herndon and Loudoun County. It is the region's primary international gateway.
• BWI is in Maryland, south of Baltimore and northeast of Washington. It serves both metro areas and is convenient to Howard and Anne Arundel counties.

How to choose an airport

Start with where your trip on the ground begins or ends, not with the airfare. A lower ticket price can be offset by a much longer ride on each end. As a rough guide:

• Staying in downtown DC, Capitol Hill, Arlington or Alexandria: DCA is the natural first choice.
• Based in Tysons, Reston, Herndon, Fairfax or Loudoun, or flying overseas: look at Dulles first.
• Based in Columbia, Laurel, Annapolis, Baltimore or the northern Maryland suburbs: BWI is often the easier airport.
• Montgomery County travelers in Bethesda, Rockville or Silver Spring are roughly in the middle, and the right answer depends on the route and the time of day.

Then look at the flight itself. A nonstop from a farther airport can beat a connection from a closer one, and an early-morning departure changes which ground options are even running.

Getting to and from Reagan National (DCA)

Metro. DCA has its own Metrorail station on the Blue and Yellow lines, connected to the terminal by covered walkways. For a traveler with light luggage heading to a destination near a station, it is one of the simplest airport rail links in the country. Check Metro's operating hours if you have a very early or very late flight, since trains do not run overnight.

Driving and parking. The airport is reached from the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Route 1. On-site garages and an economy lot are available and can fill at peak travel periods, so check the airport's parking status before you leave home.

Taxis and rideshare. Both operate from signed pickup areas. Because the trip into the city is short, this is a common choice for solo travelers, as we note in our Uber vs. limo service comparison.

Getting to and from Dulles (IAD)

Metro. The Silver Line serves a station at Dulles, linked to the main terminal by an indoor walkway. It is a genuine option for reaching Tysons, Arlington and downtown Washington, but it is a long ride with many stops, so compare it honestly with your schedule and your luggage.

Driving and parking. Most drivers reach the airport by the Dulles Access Road, which is reserved for airport traffic and runs alongside the Dulles Toll Road. Dulles has large garages and economy lots with shuttle buses to the terminal.

Taxis and rideshare. Available at the terminal. Because of the distance from the city, the price and the wait for a driver can vary more than at DCA, particularly late at night.

Getting to and from BWI

Rail. BWI has a rail station served by MARC Penn Line commuter trains and by Amtrak, with service to Union Station in Washington and Penn Station in Baltimore. The station is not inside the terminal. A free shuttle bus runs between the two, so allow time for that connection. MARC schedules are thinner on weekends and late in the evening, so check the timetable for your specific day.

Driving and parking. From the Washington side, BWI is reached by the Baltimore-Washington Parkway or I-95, then I-195 into the airport. There are hourly, daily and long-term parking facilities with shuttle service.

Taxis and rideshare. Both are available. The ride to Washington is a long one, so look at the quoted price carefully and consider whether a driver will be easy to find at your arrival time.

Timing your trip to the airport

We do not publish guaranteed drive times, because Washington traffic does not allow honest guarantees. A few principles hold up well:

• Weekday rush periods, morning and late afternoon into evening, add the most uncertainty. Friday afternoons in summer are especially slow on routes toward the Bay and the beaches.
• The Beltway, I-66, I-270, I-95 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway can each be disrupted by a single incident. Longer trips to Dulles and BWI deserve a larger cushion than the short hop to DCA.
• Follow your airline's guidance on how early to arrive at the terminal, then work backward and add a buffer for the road.
• Holiday periods and major events in the District affect both roads and security lines.

Transferring between airports

Itineraries that arrive at one airport and leave from another are more common than you might expect. There is no direct rail service linking any two of the three airports. Public transit connections are possible, generally by combining Metro lines, or Metro to Union Station and then MARC or Amtrak to BWI, but each involves changes and stairs or elevators with luggage. With a tight connection or a family in tow, a direct car is usually the realistic option. We run DCA to Dulles and DCA to BWI transfers daily.
